Can you be happy with nothing?

Probably the greater majority of people who dream about being rich are people who want to be rich so they can have things. It’s not necessarily that they think the things they plan to acquire once they have the money will make them happy. They just want to be able to have the things they want. But things are just that: things. You might imagine you get joy out of owning things; but whatever joy you think you feel is superficial. If you don’t believe you’re worth anything unless you have material possessions to prove your worth, the importance you’ll feel at wearing a Rolex, or wearing designer shoes that cost more than some people make in a year, or driving a car that costs more than most people make in a lifetime will not be coming from any place of truth. If your things were taken away from you, you’d be back believing you’re worth nothing; and things should never have that kind of power to give or take away your sense of worth.
So if your motivation for wanting to be a millionaire is to have things to prove to yourself and other people that you’re worth something, you might want to analyze that a little bit. Nothing is wrong with wanting to have comfort in life; but you shouldn’t be thinking about getting rich as being some means by which to prove you’re better than other people. Being rich won’t make you better than anyone. Having money and having things won’t do anything to change who you are at the very core of your being.
